TEAMSTERS LOCAL 916 COMMERCIAL DRIVER’S LICENSE 2025 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM IS NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS The purpose of this scholarship is to enable members or their dependents to obtain a Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). A CDL is in high demand and offers a great opportunity for to earn very good wages and benefits. Driving a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) requires a higher level of knowledge, experience, skills, and physical abilities than that required to drive a non-commercial vehicle. To obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) an applicant must pass both skills and knowledge testing geared to these higher standards. Additionally, CDL holders are held to a higher standard when operating any type of motor vehicle on public roads. Serious traffic violations committed by a CDL holder can affect their ability to maintain their CDL certification.  

Eligibility

Scholarship eligibility is limited to Teamster Local 916 members, a Teamster Local 916 member’s spouse/partner, or a child of the Member. To be eligible the Teamsters Local 916 member must be on active status and been a member for at least twenty-four (24) consecutive months. All parts of the application must be completed including a short essay as to why the applicant desires to obtain a Class “A” CDL and where they intend to work with their CDL.  

Scholarship

The deadline to submit an application is by 4:30pm Friday, January 3, 2025. On Monday, February 3, 2025, the Local Union will announce the four (4) Scholarship recipients and ask that they attend the February 20^th General Membership meeting to be announced to the membership.   The 2025 Scholarship is limited to only four (4) applicants. Due to the limited number of Scholarships awarded the granting of Scholarships will be based on: Membership history, financial need of the applicant and the applicant’s explanation for why they want to obtain a Class “A” CDL. Within one (1) year of being granted a scholarship the recipient must attend a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) certified training, complete training and obtain the CDL. The Scholarship recipient will be reimbursed up to $5,000.00 issued directly to him/her. To obtain the $5,000.00 scholarship; the recipient must provide Local 916 a copy of a) Fees paid for training; (b) Completion of training; and (c) A copy of the CLD.   All applications will be reviewed and approved by the Teamsters Local 916 Executive Board.   The applicant explicitly agrees by submitting a Scholarship application they will provide the Local Union a copy of their training certificate and a copy of their CDL to receive reimbursement. Upon receipt of the CDL the union shall assist the candidate with securing employment with a union trucking company. It is the intention of all applicants to 1) Obtain a CDL card; and 2) Work in a Teamster covered driving position.
